Kosovar refugee rock (War Child CA)
Kosovar refugees produce benefit CD for War Child Canada. In June 1999, a few Canadian musicians went to CFB Trentons Camp Recovery to entertain the Kosovar refugees living there. In a delightful twist, some of the Kosovars took over - the instruments and the evening.
From this organic start, three brothers and a cousin - aided and obetted by Wesley Weese and Wolfgang Kastenberger, who were among the 'Canadian musicians - formed the band Rinia; in loose translation from the Albanian, means "new friends." With borrowed instruments, Rinia recorded the CD Kosovo "99 at Wolf Sound studio near Trenton, Ontario. The songs are all original and were written in Canada.
Before arriving in Trenton in May 1999, the Kosovars who comprise Rinia spent six weeks at a refugee camp in Macedonia after fleeing their town of Ferizaj in Kosovo, and the horrors unfolding there. The proceeds of the CD Kosovo '99 go to War Child Canada for Kosovo relief.
